Whats to love about the Hammerhead Shark
Up towards the surface, we see the sharks swimming. But there is something about it that sets it apart from all other sharks; it is of course, the hammerhead. Its head is, literally, like nothing else on earth! These sharks are one of the most evolved, and some would say, the ugliest of the bunch. It is, perhaps, the weirdest of the 350 or so sharks roaming the oceans. Indeed, there is something unnerving about a creature with eyes protruding from either side of a boomerang shaped head. You know, that amazing flattened head like a metal detector. But, the hammerheads real beauty lies in its incredible evolutionary design. Some people even believe that the hammerhead is the most evolved of all sharks, despite its somewhat prehistoric look. It’s all about evolution and survival. The hammerheads prey does not run, it hides. So, how have the hammerheads evolved to feed on prey that will bury itself for protection? The question always arises, why do hammerheads have a head like this, and what function does it serve? To answer this question, researchers have attempted to get inside the sharks head, so to speak. First off, the head actually serves as an airplane wing, and actually keeps the front of the shark up when it is cruising the deep seas for long distances. The sharks hearing is so advanced that it can identify low frequency vibrations from even the smallest fish. Its sense of smell is amazing too. Hammerheads can sniff out blood and animal odors many miles away. And, their twin nasal cavities can pinpoint the source of a scent with remarkable accuracy, even if the smell is moving. What’s more, hammerheads can detect subtle changes in electrical fields (as low as a billionth of a voltage), allowing them to zero in on prey that’s buried out of sight.
